Door Locks & Keys

The below subject is discussed in much more depth
on our members' Door Lock page

Changing Locks

Always give new tenants the assurance that the locks on their home have been changed since the last tenants vacated. It is imperative that the previous tenants, or their friends and relatives, no longer have access to the property. Simply changing the key mechanism of a door lock is an inexpensive and simple do it yourself task that can prevent horrible consequences that might occur if it is not done in a timely manner. You don't need a locksmith or even a handyman. If you can turn a screwdriver, you can change a lock.

There are a number of procedures that can simply and reduce the cost of changing locks.

Installing New Locks

Door Lock designs are almost limitless. There are aluminum, chrome, brass, glass and even pretty pottery. There are both tubular and cylindrical locks. There are also rim locks and deadlocks for safety and protection. In fact, deciding on what style of lock you want is often more difficult than installing the lock after you buy it.

Replacing a lockset or dead bolt , or even Installing a new one, is a very easy landlord (or tenant) do-it-themselves project. Little skill is necessary, but on a new installation patience is needed to make sure all the measurements and holes are accurate.

Master Keying Information

If you are installing new exterior locksets, you may want to have the locks keyed alike. Many landlords want their locks "master-keyed" so that one key fits all of their locks. Some retailers that sell locksets have the equipment to master key.
